Synopsis: Sent to stay with his Step-Grandfather in a Rhode Island beach town for a summer, Daniel collides with Izzy, a feisty local. In a spirited dueling of minds that plays off the tropes of romantic comedy, the play explores what connection is, romantic and otherwise.
Note on the production: This is the MFA Thesis Production for Jacob Sexton, a director and playwright of new and experimental plays, with an interest in interdisciplinary collaborations. In addition to his work at Columbia University, Jacob has directed new plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville, La MaMa E.T.C., Ensemble Studio Theatre / Youngblood, Primary Stages MFA, the Brick, the Tank, and the Arkansas New Play Festival at TheatreSquared. He has assisted Anne Bogart, Les Waters, Leigh Silverman, Jon Jory, and Lila Neugebauer, among others, and is currently assisting Michael Mayer on The Avett Brothers' musical Swept Away at Berkeley Rep.
Seeking
Daniel: Seeking actor 18+ to play 16. Any Ethnicity. Male identifying. “Skinny and weird”, but smart and sharp-tongued. An outsider, Daniel holds his own, even as he is unsure of how to navigate his connection with Izzy. We are particularly interested in actors of color for this role.
Izzy: Seeking actor 18+ to play 17. Sicilian and proud of it. Female identifying. Rough and forward, but whip-crack smart. Dislikes “summer people”. Dating Jeremy. Trying to figure out why she doesn’t just punch Daniel, and what she might want to do with him instead.
George: Seeking actor to play age 50-70, actors need not be “age appropriate” to be considered for this role. Any Ethnicity. Male identifying. Daniel’s Step-Grandfather and a Rhode Island native. Still in mourning for his wife, who passed away. Tries to be supportive of Daniel. Contemplative. Believes Izzy is “trashy” at the beginning of the play. We are particularly interested in actors of color for this role.
Jeremy: Mid-twenties. Any Ethnicity. Male identifying. The Bro-iest of Bros. Fancies himself a philosopher. Practices a “Christian-oriented martial art of his own devising, like Bruce Lee and Jesus.” Dating Izzy and fantasizing about proposing. Underneath the bravado, deeply insecure.
